The feast of the Mother of God "Eleovritisa" at the Holy Great Monastery of Vatopedi (2026)

According to the order of the Monastery, the icon of the Mother of God is transferred from the Docheio (building for storing the oil) to the Catholicon of the Monastery. After the end of the Divine Liturgy, a sacred procession of the Veneration of the Mother of God is held.

This year's feast was attended by the protosyngelos of the Holy Monastery of Phocis and Abbot of the Holy Monastery of Saints Augustine and Seraphim of Sarov, Elder Nektarios Moulatsiotis, accompanied by the fathers of the Monastery, the protosyngelos of the Holy Archdiocese of Crete, Archimandrite Bartholomew Vogiatzoglou, and other fathers who came to the Monastery to participate in the celebrations.
This icon dates back to the 14th century and is located in the monastery's reliquary. From there it is transferred to the catholicon on Good Friday, the day on which it is celebrated.


Tradition Bookshops the following miracle: During a period of oil shortage in the monastery, Saint Gennadios, the monastery's cupbearer, began to economize on the oil, giving it only for the use of the church.
But the cook complained to the abbot, and the latter ordered the saint to give oil to the brotherhood liberally, hoping in the providence of the Lady Theotokos. When one day the saint Gennadius went to the vessel, he saw the oil overflowing from the laver and reaching the door. Since then the icon has had a wonderful fragrance.
