The high-rise buildings and the wings of the eastern wall

Around the middle of the 17th century, on the inner side of the eastern wall and in correspondence with its two towers, two multi-storey narrow buildings with superimposed arched vaults were erected. These buildings were later incorporated into the two multi-storey wings of the eastern wall. The latter were built in 1815 and 1818-19 and are characteristic examples of the new trends, based on which the monumental residential wings of Mount Athos began to be designed. They consist of two rows of rooms-apartments on either side of a corridor. The view towards the courtyard is formed with blind arches in superimposed rows. In their construction, the widespread use of bricks is abandoned; this element is a foreshadowing of the stone facades that will prevail on Mount Athos after the mid-19th century.
