The Chapel of the Sacred Belt

The chapel of the Sacred Belt is the most interesting of the chapels of the Monastery, since it constitutes, as a whole, a brilliant example of the post-Byzantine temple architecture of Mount Athos during the peak of modern Hellenism. It belongs to the type of Athonite temple. The sanctuary has a niche and the apse is covered with a dome. On the exterior of the temple, the three domes, the arched configuration of the walls and the brick-enclosed masonry are impressive. Inside the temple, the wood-carved iconostasis of the early 19th century, the pews, the wood-carved door with the pilasters made of marble Byzantine iconostasis, the washbasin of the sanctuary and numerous other elements with high quality construction stand out. According to the founding inscription, the church was built in 1794 at the expense of Theophilos Sozopolitis and was decorated with icons in 1861 by Nikiforos and Anthimos.
