He was from Ryssio in Bithynia, in the province of Chalcedon. He studied at Athonia, Rizareio School and the Theological School of Chalki. In 1851 he was tonsured a monk and appointed chief secretary of the Monastery. His elder was Elder Paisios the Teacher.

In 1855 he was appointed professor at the Theological School of Chalki. Previously, he had served as professor and headmaster of the Athoniad School.

In 1857 he was ordained an archimandrite and appointed as exarch of the Monastery in the Bessarabian diocese in succession to Archimandrite Ioannikios of Cyprus. In 1871 he was appointed director of the Commercial School of Chalki.

In 1874 he was appointed Grand Protosyngelos of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, while in 1879 he was elected Metropolitan of Korytsa and Slasphoros. On May 8, while touring his province, he was swept away by the waters of the Aoos River and drowned at the age of 50.

He wrote and published commentaries on the discourse on priesthood of Saint John Chrysostom, as well as the biography of the Saint, which was considered the best until the 19th century. The artoklasia with his name, a gift to the Skete of Saint Demetrius, as well as many of his letters in the archives of the Monastery, are preserved in the sacristy.
