Metropolitan of Thessaloniki Makarios Papageorgopoulos

Makarios was born in Zakynthos in 1465. In 1517 he ascended to the metropolitan throne of Thessaloniki after being transferred from the diocese of Corinth, which he had pastored for ten years (1507-1517). He resigned from his position and settled in the Vatopedi Monastery, where he died in 1546 as monk Michael. Makarios was a scholar and his valuable collection of manuscripts and printed matter remained in the Monastery, along with his encolpion and his seal.
