The Holy Monastery of Vatopedi is a huge building complex with a built-up area of ​​35.000 square meters, while the Sketes and Cells that belong to it have a built-up area of ​​over 50.000 square meters.

According to the opinion of experts, the building complex of the Holy Monastery was in a critical condition in 1990 due to the long-term lack of systematic maintenance, the numerous damages caused by time, as well as the urgent needs for modernization. Since 1990, approximately 1/3 of the Monastery has been restored. Also, the Skete of Saint Andrew (Serai) in Karyes, the Skete of Saint Demetrius, the Old Athonia School and many Cells belonging to the Monastery with a total built-up area of ​​over 50.000 square meters need to be restored. If we take into account that the annual subsidies of the State from European funds cover a minimal part, without the substantial financial contribution from the Monastery, the restorations are impossible to complete.
