Epigonion of the Ecumenical Patriarch Paisios, year 1744

The kneeler (side length 28,5 cm.) is decorated with a representation of Christ as High Priest, within a circle inscribed in a square. The symbols of the four evangelists are depicted at the corners of the square, while around its sides there is a wide frame with floral ornaments. The decoration is as a whole influenced by Western models (rococo), since the decoration of the edges with conventional vegetation and the secular character is particularly emphasized, thus limiting the central representation and consequently the importance of the functionality of the work. A four-line inscription written inside the square informs that the work was commissioned by the Ecumenical Patriarch Paisios II in the workshop of the embroiderer Eusebia in the year 1744. Eusebia crafted the work in a masterful manner, demonstrating the high quality of her technique. The embroidery was performed on red silk fabric with fine silk thread of various shades, with silver thread, gold and silver wire and with numerous gems.
