Epitaph, donated by voivode Vasilios Lupus, year 1651-2

The epitaph belongs to the historical type of epitaphs, which prevailed in the post-Byzantine era in comparison with the liturgical one. It is embroidered on red velvet and covered with a newer lining for conservation reasons. In the middle, Christ is depicted lying on the stone on which he was wrapped after the Decapitation. On the left, the Virgin Mary, seated at the edge of the slab, holds the head of the deceased in her lap. On the right, Joseph grasps the Lord's feet in order to wrap them in the shroud. Behind the stone stands John, who is embracing His hand, and next to him are the holy women Mary Magdalene and Mary of Joseph, mourning. In the zone below the central scene, four kneeling angels are depicted, two of whom are holding fan. The decoration of the upper zone is similar, where a fifth angel has been added, holding a handkerchief to wipe his tears. The corners are occupied by the symbols of the Evangelists, while the ribbons of the arches that enclose them are embroidered with the victory hymn “ADONTA, VOONTA, KEKRAGOTA KEI LEGONTA”. The scene is surrounded by two frames; inside them is placed the votive inscription of the epitaph, which informs us that it was made in 1651-2, as a donation by the distinguished ruler of Moldavia Vasilei Lupu and his wife to the Moldavian monastery of the Ascension, the so-called Golia.
