Chalice with cover from the church of Saint Nicholas of Tokati, year 1750
15.12.2017
Chalice with a cover (total height 49,5 cm.), which, according to the dedicatory inscription on the rim of its cup, was made for the church of Saint Nicholas of Tokati in Asia Minor in 1750. The reason for its transfer to the Vatopedi Monastery remains unknown. The chalice is large in size and unusual in shape. Its surface, gilded for the most part, is decorated with floral decoration, breastplate figures of prophets and apostles, cherubs and seraphim, which have been rendered with low bulges. The configuration of its base in two lobed levels and the spherical knots that make up the stem of the foot, which are rendered with the wire technique and decorated with grains and nails, are characteristic. The decoration is complemented by small precious and semi-precious stones. The chalice is considered, based on its shape and decoration, to be the work of an Asia Minor workshop.
