Encolpion-panagiario, work of the master Zotos, year 1670
09.05.2011
The small encolpion-panagiario (height 7 cm) was made in 1670 by the master Zotos, with the contribution and expenses of "EK XANTHIC EK CHORAS IOANINA". Its two leaves are connected by hinges, thus reminiscent of a small book. Their wooden core is perforated, with traces of gilding and paint. On the left leaf is represented the Virgin Mary with the baby Jesus, between six wings and framed by prophets, and in the lower zone the Evangelists within arched openings. On the right leaf is depicted the Hospitality of Abraham framed by apostles and saints, and in the lower zone the Annunciation and saints Constantine and Helen. The exterior facades are decorated with indigo and gilded rosettes, the strong color contrast of which must probably be attributed to the attempt to imitate leather inlays with gold engravings. This particular type of decoration is associated with the style of early floral baroque, which, centered in Constantinople, spread to provincial silversmith workshops.
