Mural of the main church of the catholicon with the representation of the Ascension, year 1312, with newer overpaintings
11.05.2011
The scene of the Ascension occupies the entire area of the eastern arch of the catholicon. In the center, Christ is depicted ascending in glory held by four angels, and on the sides, two groups of apostles with the Virgin Mary and the Angels. The scene belongs to the decoration of 1312, but the figures are painted over on their faces and clothing. The robust, imposing and statuesque torsos of the apostles are characteristic, the height and bulk of which strongly exude a sense of the monumental.
