Mural of the main church of the catholicon with the depiction of the Baptism, year 1312
11.05.2011
The multi-faceted composition of the Baptism of Christ is depicted in a dominant position in the quadrant of the southern choir of the catholicon, directly opposite the Epitaph Lament. A characteristic of the representation is the gentle alternation of light and shadow on the faces of the figures, such as the apostles John and Andrew, but also the white line that defines the outer contour of Andrew's face, in order to detach it from the flat surface and distinguish it from the adjacent figures. The representation belongs to the decoration of 1312 and was created by a painter who selectively drew various elements from the painting of Protatus (around 1290) and the Serbian monuments of the first two decades of the 14th century.
