Mural of the main church of the catholicon with the representation of Saint Eustathius of Thessaloniki, year 1312
11.05.2011
The fresco of Saint Eustathius of Thessaloniki is included in the series of hierarchs depicted in three consecutive zones in the prothesis of the monastery's catholicon. The saint, who was Archbishop of Thessaloniki at the time of the fall of the city by the Normans in 1185, holds a particularly honorable position, as he is found between the patriarchs of Constantinople Proclus and Nikephoros. It is interesting that the depiction of the saint until now was known only from monuments in Serbia, the decoration of which is due to or attributed to the painters of Thessaloniki Michael Astrapas and Eutychius. The figure has a broad face with a rough expression, a fleshy forked nose, a network of red lines on the apples of the face, green shadows on the pale flesh, but also a body width. The representation belongs to the decoration of 1312 and was created by a conservative painter, whose art is associated with the painting of Protatus.
