Introduction to Byzantine Murals

In the Vatopedi Monastery, the frescoes of the Byzantine era (963-1430) are located in the catholicon and in the chapel of Agioi Anargyroi. The picture is complemented by three fragments of frescoes, the origin and original location of which are unknown. These are works of exceptional artistic quality, representing the dominant artistic trends of the Late Komnenian and Palaiologan painting. The leading work of the Palaiologan revival are the frescoes of the exonarthex of the catholicon, part of which is attributed to the workshop of the painter from Thessaloniki, Manuel Panselinos.
