08.05.2011
Small-sized encolpion (3,3X1 cm.) made of jasper, with a representation of the Virgin Mary in a bust. The outline of her body is stylized, while the facial features and hands, although rendered with particular simplicity, are distinguished for their expressiveness. The encolpion is dated based on its style to the 12th-13th century. It is surrounded by a 16th century frame, which is made of gilded silver and decorated with semi-precious stones and pearls. The plate attached to the back of the encolpion is also silver-gilded. On it is a cross that has been rendered with engravings and enamel.
