Icon of the Hospitality of Abraham with inlay of the gilt technique, late 14th century

The silver-gilt lining of the icon with the Hospitality of Abraham was made using the wire technique (117X92 cm). Its decoration consists of a trefoil-shaped ornament and circles of various sizes, within which is a plant with winding shoots, or an isosceles cross surrounded by similar shoots. The decoration of the frame is similar, to which have been added nailed circular buttons and square partitions with busts of saints, which belong to different time periods. The strip that separates the frame from the depth of the icon is covered by two rows of wreath-like ornament, surrounded by heart-shaped shoots. The original lining is one of the best examples of the wire technique of the late 14th-early 15th century and comes from a workshop in Thessaloniki. The small, more recent additions, harmoniously combined, concern certain buttons and partitions of the frame and the lower corners and date mainly to the 16th and 18th centuries.
