Saint Gennadius the Archangel

He was a monk of the monastery and had the office of dochiaris, that is, the storekeeper and steward of the oil. "He showed himself to be a type of holy monk, and through his inner diligence and other virtuous life he reached a measure of holiness, even working miracles."

It is said that during a period of great shortage of oil in the monastery, the holy keeper of the oil-candle, thinking that he should save it so that the church lamps would not go out, began to cut it short. However, the cook complained to the abbot, who ordered the holy man to continue to give oil to the brotherhood as before, hoping in the good providence of the Theotokos. When one day the holy man Gennadius went to his service at the oil-candle, he saw the oil overflowing from the jars and reaching the door.

The icon of the Virgin Mary there, the chosen one of the Olive-Springers, has had a wonderful fragrance ever since. “This holy one is still there in the same Dochios, emitting a miracle and an indescribable fragrance, and some more clearly call this holy icon Dochiarissa.” This icon dates from the 14th century and is transferred to the Catholicon of the monastery on the Friday of the Transfiguration, the day on which it is celebrated.

The memory of Saint Gennadios of Vatopedi is commemorated on November 17.
