Introduction to the Monastery Archives

Vatopedi houses one of the largest monastic archives of the Orthodox East, which is a valuable source for the history of the Monastery, Hellenism, and the other Balkan ethnicities. The majority of the archival material is in Greek. However, the expansion of the Monastery's activities and its prestige in the Danubian principalities and Slavic-speaking regions resulted in the formation of a voluminous Romanian and Slavic archive, while the Ottoman archive is equally large.
