Holy Monastery of Koutloumousi
05.05.2011
It was founded before 1169, the year in which it is first mentioned. During the second half of the 14th century, when Chariton the Imbrius was abbot, the Monastery was greatly strengthened and renovated at the expense of the rulers of the Danubian regions. Although Chariton became metropolitan of Hungary and Wallachia in 1372, he continued to be abbot of Koutloumousi, benefiting it and regulating the relations of the Greeks and Romanians who were monks in the Monastery. The Katholikon, dedicated to the Transfiguration of the Savior, was built in the second half of the 14th century and frescoed a century later. The exonarthex was frescoed in 1744. The chapel of "the Terrible Protection", with the miraculous icon of the same name, was built in 1733. The monastery includes the adjacent Skete of Saint Panteleimon (also called "Koutloumousiani") and the cell of the Forerunner in Karyes, founded by Dionysius of Fournas.
