Elder Ephraim of Vatopedi: "The Inner Life of the Priest"

02.05.2026

At the 7th General Priestly Synod of the Holy Metropolis of Demetrias, under the chairmanship of Metropolitan Ignatius of Demetrias and Almyros, the Abbot of the Vatopedi Metropolitanate, Elder Ephraim, spoke on the topic "The Inner Life of the Priest".

Initially, His Eminence expressed his special joy for the most honorable presence of Elder Ephraim and thanked him, once again, for his many benefits to the Local Church and in particular to the Holy Monastery of the Most Great Patriarchs of Pelion, of which he is the Spiritual Father. Subsequently, Elder Ephraim emphasized the importance of caring for a Priest’s inner life, the primary characteristic of which must be his complete love for God, for the arrangement of his entire pastoral work.

He observed that the ministry of the Holy Altar is great and awesome, therefore a pure life and a developed spiritual sense of what is being done are required on the part of the Priest. The Divine Liturgy is not a performance, but a supreme Mystery, which Christ performs and we offer Him our lips and hands. Therefore, the first missionary action of the Priest must be the Divine Liturgy, through which the light of Christ is experienced, the Divine Love is acquired, which is the fruit of keeping the Commandments of Christ.

The Elder referred to the value of humility in the life of the Priest, which is attractive to Divine Grace and to the love of the Divine Word, which contributes to intimacy with God. Referring to sayings and especially the example of contemporary sanctified figures of Athos, such as Saints Sophronios the Athonite, Ephraim the Katounakiote and Elder Joseph of Vatopedi, he spoke about the importance of the attention that the Priest must demonstrate and the suffering for God that must distinguish him in the Divine Liturgy, because only then will Grace dwell within him and be able to inspire people.

Concluding his speech, Elder Ephraim referred to the importance of repentance for the Priest, which must be continuous, because in this way the charism is rekindled and his soul is purified. He leaves the orbit of the earth and passes into the orbit of God and can perform his entire priestly work. Continuous repentance brings to the soul of the Priest the peace of God, which he transmits to the faithful and transforms him into a man of the future age, who lives eternity from now on. A fruitful dialogue followed and the summary of the conclusions by the Metropolitan of Demetrias and Almyros, Mr. Ignatius.
