Archimandrite Ioannikios the Cypriot

15.12.2017

Originally from Pedoulas on the island of Cyprus, he studied at the School of Kydonias. He served for many years as the chief secretary of the Holy Community during the years of the Revolution of 1821.

After being ordained Archimandrite in 1846, he was sent from the Monastery to a monastery in Bessarabia after the death of Irinoupolis as exarch of the Vatopedi diocese there for 12 years. He then returned to the Monastery, which he administered and directed with great prudence as its first commissioner. He died in 1871 at the age of 80.

He was a lover of letters and helped to create a co-educational school in his hometown of Pedoulas, as well as the Pancyprian Gymnasium in Nicosia, being proclaimed by its council as its great benefactor.

His objects, such as consecration crosses, icons and books, are preserved in the Monastery's sacristy.
