Antimensio of Archpriest Metrophanes, year 1719

The oldest of the at least two hundred antimensia of the Vatopedi Monastery is that of a high priest named Metrophanes. The central rectangular representation includes the scene of the Epitaph of Lamentation, the Symbols of the Passion and in the corners the busts of the four Evangelists. The composition is surrounded by a series of symbolic representations, which have been rendered schematically. At the bottom of the composition is the following inscription written in Slavic characters; “They were blessed and sanctified by the hand of His Holiness Metropolitan Metrophanes – ZCKs”. Therefore, this particular antimensia is associated with Metropolitan Metrophanes and dates back to 1719.
