Portable icon of the Last Supper, second half of the 12th century
07.05.2011
The center of the portable icon depicting the Last Supper occupies a semicircular table. At the left end is Jesus, seated on a bed. He holds a closed scroll in one hand, while with the other he blesses. The figure's cross-shaped halo is decorated with precious stones. Right next to him sits His beloved disciple John. He is depicted in advanced age, an element that is rare for the iconography of the scene and does not correspond to historical reality. In the center of the group, Judas extends his hand to the "skutel". At the right end, the apostle Peter can be seen. The red background of the composition is characteristic, on which we read the misspelled inscription; "Ο ΠΙΠΝΟΣ".

The scene is framed by two simple buildings, which indicate the space. The icon is dated mainly based on its style to the second half of the 12th century. Due to its small dimensions (25,5 x 18 cm.) it is likely that it was part of a chapel epistyle.
