Mural of the main church of the catholicon with the depiction of the Last Supper, year 1312, with newer overpaintings
11.05.2011
The composition of the Last Supper is located in the lower zone of the southern choir of the catholicon. As a whole, it retains the iconographic shape of the original decoration of 1312, but the faces of the figures have been repainted, as a result of which their expressiveness has been significantly altered. Christ sits on a mat, placed to the left of the altar. The large proportions of the body of the Lord and the apostle Peter are impressive, as well as the agitated and intensely moving apostles. Characteristic are the fleshy faces, the thick necks and the eyes that give the impression of bulging eyes.
The depth of the composition is defined by a complex architecture, on the surface of which are painted bands with shields, medals framed by shoots, as well as full-length breast figures, given in a monochrome technique. This expressionist painting is also distinguished in representations of the exonarthex, an element that allows us to conclude that the frescoes of the two specific parts of the catholicon were done simultaneously. The artist of these specific frescoes is conventionally called the “painter of the Deposition”, based on the homonymous representation that he painted in the exonarthex of the catholicon.
