"VIRGIN OF OLIVE PRESS" – miraculous icon of the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi

Something that particularly characterizes the Holy Monastery of Vatopedi is the existence of many miraculous icons of our Virgin Mary; seven miraculous icons of the Lady Theotokos have remained in the Monastery. Together with the fact that the Holy Belt, the only Mother of God garment that has survived from the earthly life of the Virgin Mary, is also kept here, they make Vatopedi a Theotokos-covered Monastery with special Mother of God Grace. The icon “Virgin Mary the Oil-Sprinkler” dates back to the 14th century and is located in the Monastery’s vessel. From there it is transferred to the catholicon on Friday of the Transfiguration, the day on which it is celebrated. When one day the saint Gennadius went to the container, he saw the oil overflowing from the jars and reaching the door, while a wonderful fragrance was coming from the icon.
